Spanning over 6.8 million sqm in the holy city of Madinah, the KEC urban development scheme is the third of four economic cities announced by the Saudi Kingdom in June 2006.

This national plan hopes to increase GDP by 150 Billion USD upon completion, and will redefine the KSA economy as a diverse, business friendly and multi-sectoral national and international economy.

Knowledge Economy City (KEC) is linked to this national strategy through its proximity to several transport hubs (high speed rail, airport, highways, etc.), its core foundation stemming from educational and research activities and attractive assets that bring millions of visitors. Its expansion and developing institutions will provide a platform for new businesses and investors who wish to profit from the numerous resources the city has to offer. Through public private partnerships, the project aims to accelerate socio-economic development and increase life quality throughout the Kingdom.

UrbanEmerge conducted research for JLL for the Knowledge Economy City Master Plan. The research included a sectoral study, and Economic Impact Assessment and fieldwork and interviews in Madinah. We identified the sectors of interest, translated those into specific actionable guidance for informing the Master Plan, and developed an economic Impact Assessment of the KEC project.
