Project: Developing Guidance for CSOs to Operationalise Environmental Sustainability

Client: Mannion Daniels (UK Aid)

Date: July to Sept 2021

UrbanEmerge is developing comprehensive, practical and easily understandable guidance for civil society operations (CSOs) that apply for and implement programmes via the UK Aid Direct platform, which is managed by Mannion Daniels. The guidance provides initial context on the importance of environmental responsibility in direct operations and wider programmes, within a framework of climate change, ecology and waste management and with a focus on the interlinkages between environment and poverty. Guidance and supporting tools and templates are provided for setting up an Environmental Management System (EMS), conducting an assessment of environmental impact and mitigating actions, conducting a carbon footprint assessment, with consideration for multiple different country contexts, guidance on net-zero and Science-Based Targets (SBTs), the role of carbon offsetting (as a last resort) and effective monitoring, reporting and communications for environmental performance. This includes understanding and avoiding greenwashing and the possibility of measuring and disclosing GHG emissions to an accredited body such as CDP.
